This position sits within the Mechatronics Systems (MechSys) team, part of Dyson’s world class Research, Design and Development (RDD) department. We are a group of multi-disciplinary engineers that practices a blend of software, mechanical and electrical/electronic expertise. We are the team behind some of Dyson's intelligent product features, such as the Auto Mode floor type detection and dust detection features in our cordless vacuums, as well as other cutting-edge features that are currently in confidential development. In addition, we also develop bespoke solutions for internal automated testing and data analysis applications. These bespoke solutions enable both our team and fellow Dyson engineers to pioneer new technologies in situations where existing solutions do not exist.

We develop, tune and test algorithms. We regularly code in C, Python, and LabVIEW. We typically use Raspberry Pis, Arduinos, and National Instruments hardware. We design mechanical components, fixtures, and clever mechanisms. We design our own electrical/electronic circuits, and the occasional PCBAs. We bring our designs to life by fabricating our own prototypes as much as possible, and partner with external suppliers where necessary.

About the role

As an intern in MechSys, you’ll be at the frontlines of problem solving. You’ll have the opportunity to apply the knowledge you’ve learnt in university, while gaining real-world working experience. For maximum exposure, you’ll be given the responsibility to deliver your own project, along with guidance and support from experienced mentor(s). Some of your tasks could include:

• Participate in the live development of intelligent technologies in our products

• Develop test and/or analysis solutions that enable or enhance the development of our products

• Apply multi-disciplinary skills and knowledge to generate ideas, solve problems and offer solutions to technical challenges

• Collaborate with engineers and specialists from a wide variety of technical disciplines to deliver objectives

About you

Our internship roles are competitive and delivering the next generation of Dyson technology is tough, so you will need to be:

• Working towards a relevant bachelor degree (computer science, data science, electrical/electronics, mechanical, mechatronics engineering, etc.)

• Able to commit full-time for at least 12 weeks

• Graduating by Q3 2025

• Passionate about problem solving and good design

• Always challenging the status quo, coming up with solutions to difficult problems

• Constantly tinkering and investigating new technologies as a hobby

• Curious, eager to learn, and unafraid to venture into the unknown

• Highly driven, enjoy challenges and strive to get the best results

• Adept in planning, organising, and applying an analytical/logical approach to problem-solving

• Fluent in communicating in English, both verbal and written

• Collaborative with good inter-personal skills

Owing to the wide range of applied skillsets in our team, the skillsets listed below would be advantageous, but not a must. Most importantly, we’re looking for passion or interest in the multi-disciplinary domain of mechatronics.

• Software development in Python, LabVIEW, C/C++, MATLAB, JavaScript, and/or SQL

• Mechanical design of metallic and/or plastic components, preferably using Siemens NX

• Electrical/electronic circuit and PCBA design, preferably using Altium Designer

• Application/knowledge of:

  • Data acquisition

  • Data processing

  • Data analytics

  • Image processing

  • Machine learning

  • Automation

  • Control Systems

• Familiarity with:

  • Agile practices and Atlassian tools
